Proud words (Ken Hensley) (LP 2758)

Ken Hensley  Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf (Vinyl, Music on Vinyl Records, 1973/ reissue 2020) ****

GenreRock

Places I remember: Real Groovy Records

Fab, and all the other pimply hyperboles: From Time To Time

Gear costume: Fortune

Active compensatory factors: Over the years, I despaired of ever finding a copy of this in secondhand record stores, so I bought a reissue copy a few years ago.

The debut solo album by the Uriah Heep keyboard wizard shouldn't be that obscure, but it seems it is.

This is a charming record and a billion miles away from the Uriah Heep bombast (much as I love that). Ken's vocals are of course familiar from that heavy rock band, but he displays notable restraint throughout Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf.

He was also the main songwriter in Uriah Heep and yet, interestingly, these songs don't sound like Heep songs. As Gary Thain says in his liner notes, Ken had a great versatility as a singer-musician.

Sadly, Ken is no longer with us - he died in 2020, around the time I got this reissue.

Where do they all belong? Loads more coming when we eventually get to U.
