The Boo Radleys Wake Up! (CD, Creation Records, 1995) ****

Fab, and all the other pimply hyperboles: Wake Up, Boo!
Gear costume: Find the Answer Within (love the backwards vocals along the way)

They loom large in his legend (The Album Collection playlists): Part 1; Part 2; Part 3; Part 4; Part 5; Part 6
Active compensatory factors: I was first aware of The Boo Radley's from a sampler CD of Brit pop. I enjoyed their sound and then I saw the cover of Wake Up! (their third album) and I was sold. Are you kidding me? A stylised Hofner bass guitar?? Can only mean one thing, right - a love of The Beatles and Paul McCartney. I'm up for that.

Chuck on that first song and it's pure Revolver era Beatles. Martin Carr (guitarist/composer) knows what he's doing with layered harmonies, churning guitars and a driving beat. The rest of the album lives up to that early promise. As the AllMusic critic says - the album is 'a sterling piece of pure pop, with all the big choruses, bright melodies, and simple hooks that word implies.'
Where do they all belong? I've tried other albums by The Boo Radleys, but this is their best for me. It was also their commercial peak.
