Instant armadillo blues (New Riders Of The Purple Sage) (LP 3354 - 3355)

New Riders Of The Purple Sage Brujo (Vinyl, CBS Records, 1974) ***

New Riders Of The Purple Sage The Best of New Riders Of The Purple Sage (Vinyl, CBS Records, 1976) ***

Genre: Country rock

Places I remember: Second hand shops

Fab, and all the other pimply hyperboles
: Panama Red (Best of...)

Gear costume: You Angel You (Brujo and Best of...), Crooked Judge (Brujo)

They loom large in his legend (The Album Collection playlists): Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5

Active compensatory factors: This bunch of laid back country rock musicians have links to The Byrds (Skip Battin), Jefferson Airplane (Spencer Dryden) and Grateful Dead among others (Garcia was often a featured player in the early days and Robert Hunter is also involved).

Brujo is the only studio album I have by them. It probably sounds like all the ones before and after to be fair (this was their fifth), given the bedrock of excellent pedal steel from Buddy Cage and the yee ha approach by the others.

I used to have a copy of The Adventures Of Panama Red but it was lost in a house move. That's why I've included The Best Of album here - it's probably the best way to approach the band and, handily, it includes the aforesaid Panama Red.

Where do they all belong? A lovely fun slice of California sun baked country rock.
